FABLAB Australia came into being during recuperation from shoulder reconstruction surgery in 2025 (and the necessary closure of business activities thanks to the arm being in a sling). The reconstruction was due to a layer cake of overuse, abuse, age, wear, tear and injury from work and sports and trail building across a good number of decades. During this extended break, I purchased a 3D printer and dove into learning CAD software – initially printing things I would have ordinarily made out of wood or would have had to buy at Hammer Barn. After a while, the penny dropped and I got my head around how to design and prototype in 3D and much printing began. Since then, I’ve crafted a lot of products for the workshop, my tool boxes and created a range of things to round out my custom van fitout, for bikes, tools, mounts etc. As a graphic designer and maker, I have always enjoyed the thought process involved in taking an idea through to a completed thing and now if the 3D space I am immensely enjoying the challenge of arriving at a well resolved designs to that fit well, function smoothly, create space and make your life more organised.
